Gillian Einstein, a professor in the Faculty of Arts & Science’s department of psychology and an adjunct scientist at Baycrest and Women’s College Hospital, has been awarded an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Linköping University (LiU), Sweden.
The university confers honorary doctorates in recognition of contributions to society in general, or to the faculty’s research or education.
Einstein was honoured for “her unique contribution to medical gender research from a trans-scientific and holistic perspective focusing on the whole human being,” said Professor Anders Persson of LiU during the university’s Academic Ceremony on May 25.
Einstein served as a guest professor at LiU for nine years, first in its department of biomedical and clinical sciences and later in the department of gender studies. There, she formed a multidisciplinary team of scientists, medical practitioners and gender-studies scholars to study cognition in younger to middle-aged women who have had their ovaries removed to reduce their risk of cancer.
“That my colleagues valued my work enough to put me up for this honour is meaningful to me on so many levels,” says Einstein, who is cross-appointed to the Dalla Lana School of Public Health.
While in Sweden, Einstein presented a public lecture at LiU’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences on the role of sex and gender in dementia.
