Brenda Cossman recognized by Canadian Bar Association

Brenda Cossman, a professor, Goodman-Schipper Chair and associate dean, research in the Faculty of Law, has been recognized with a 2025 Hero Award by the Canadian Bar Association's Sexual and Gender Diversity Alliance Section (SAGDA) .

The award recognizes excellence within the Canadian legal profession in advancing the cause of equality for LGBTQ2S+ people.

Cossman has written extensively on legal issues affected the LGBTQ2S+ community. She has authored several books including "Sexual Citizens: The Legal and Cultural Regulation of Sex and Belonging," "The New Sex Wars: Sexual Harm in the #MeToo Era" and the co-edited "Enticements: Queer Legal Studies." She served as director of U of T’s Mark S. Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies for nearly a decade.

“Brenda’s commitment to advancing justice, equality and visibility for the LGBTQ2+ communities is exemplified also through her extensive body of scholarship,” said University Professor Jutta Brunnée, dean and James Marshall Tory Dean’s Chair. “We congratulate her on this well-deserved recognition from the Canadian Bar Association.”
