Timothy Snyder receives honorary degree from University of Oxford

Timothy Snyder, a professor and inaugural Chair in Modern European History, supported by the Temerty Endowment for Ukrainian Studies, at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, has been recognized with an honorary degree from the University of Oxford.

Oxford awards honorary degrees to individuals of exceptional distinction in recognition of their contributions to academic inquiry, public life, the arts and notable service to the university.

Snyder is a leading historian specializing in Central Europe, Ukraine, the Soviet Union and the Holocaust, and is the author or editor of 20 books translated into 40 languages. He is the director of the Public History Lab at the Munk School, a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna and head of the academic advisory council of the Ukrainian History Global Initiative.

Snyder was among eight exceptional individuals to receive honorary degrees at Oxford's annual Encaenia ceremony. His fellow recipients included Nobel Prize-winning biophysicist Erwin Neher and long-distance runner and humanitarian Mo Farah.
