Gloria Epstein honoured by Toronto Lawyers Association

Gloria Epstein, former justice in the Superior Court of Justice and Court of Appeal for Ontario and University of Toronto alumna, has been awarded the Toronto Lawyers Association’s Award of Distinction.

The annual award recognizes Toronto lawyers for their outstanding contributions to the legal profession.

A graduate of U of T’s Faculty of Law, Epstein practiced litigation at two large Toronto firms before founding Gloria Epstein & Associates in the mid-1980s.

In 2007, she was appointed to the Ontario Court of Appeal, where her decision in the case of M v. H helped pave the way for marriage equality in Canada. She retired from the bench in 2018 to lead the Independent Civilian Review into Missing Person Investigations.

Epstein has received numerous awards in recognition of her contributions, including a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa and Arbor Award from U of T. Today, she continues to work as a mediator and arbitrator in Toronto.
