Emily Wood wins Presenters' Choice award at Ontario Three Minute Thesis Final

Emily Wood, a PhD candidate from the department of speech-language pathology in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, has been recognized with the Presenters' Choice award at the 2025 Ontario Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Finals.

The 2025 3MT Finals were hosted by U of T's School of Graduate Studies on behalf of the Ontario Council on Graduate Studies. Wood was one of 12 finalists who presented their research in under three minutes – using a single static slide – to a non-specialist judging panel and audience.

Her presentation, "Turning the page on unfair reading screening," demonstrated how building equity into early childhood reading assessments can produce fairer and more accurate results, especially for multilingual children. It was selected for the $250 Presenters' Choice award by her peers.

“The Ontario 3MT gives us a wonderful opportunity to bring graduate students together from across the province – to present their research, learn about each other’s research activities, develop professional skills and contribute to a province-wide research culture," said Joshua Barker, U of T's vice-provost, graduate research and education and dean of the School of Graduate Studies. "The quality of presentations in this competition is truly exceptional across the board."
