Brett Story’s documentary “Union” shortlisted for Academy Award
Published: January 14, 2025
Union, a documentary film co-directed by Assistant Professor Brett Story of the Faculty of Arts & Science’s Cinema Studies Institute, has been shortlisted in the Documentary Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.
The film chronicles the Amazon Labor Union’s fight to unionize the JKF8 Warehouse in Staten Island, New York – the first successful union campaign at a facility operated by the online retailing giant.
Co-directed by Story and Stephen Maing, Union premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024, and has played at over a hundred international festivals. It screened at Toronto’s Hot Docs Cinema on Jan. 11.
The Globe & Mail described Union as “a political film of rare intimacy” and “quietly inspirational,” noting the film has received widespread critical acclaim.
In an interview with The Globe, Story said she was heartened by the efforts of the small group of workers who led the drive to form the union. “It’s really valuable to see people win,” she said. “Like, we don’t see people win, ever.”
