U of T Law sweeps the Julius Alexander Isaac Moot

University of Toronto Law students took home top prizes at the Julius Alexander Isaac Moot (“The Isaac) – a competition held at the Ontario Court of Appeal.

Mooting offers students opportunities to practice and improve oral advocacy skills in a simulated appellate court or arbitration, for credit. The Isaac is named after the late chief justice of the Federal Court of Appeal, Julius Alexander Isaac, the first Black judge to sit on the Federal Court of Canada. Since 2008, this moot has focused on an area of law in which issues of equity and diversity arise.

Coming out of the preliminary rounds in February, both the U of T Faculty of Law appellant’s team (Daniel Yang and Elizabeth Chan) and respondent’s team (Kristen Kephalas and Liam Thompson) were ranked first, resulting in an all-U of T final.

Kephalas and Thompson took the top prize for Best Team and Yang and Chan won Best Appellant’s Team and Best Factum. Kephalas also received the Spirit of the Moot Award for best exemplifying the ideals and objectives of the moot.
