Micheline Piquette-Miller recognized by Canadian Society of Pharmacology and Therapeutics

Micheline Piquette-Miller, professor and associate dean of research at the University of Toronto’s Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, has received the 2025 Senior Investigator Award from the Canadian Society of Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

The award is intended to stimulate and recognize research in basic or clinical pharmacology. It’s awarded annually to a member of the society for significant contributions to the advancement and extension of knowledge in the field, and comes with a $1,000 prize.

Piquette-Miller researches the risks and benefits of medications in pregnancy, particularly for those who have underlying health conditions. She has shown that inflammation related to disease impacts drug transporters, which are proteins in cell membranes that control how medications are absorbed, used and eliminated. During pregnancy, inflammation acts on drug transporters in the placenta, influencing how much of a medication reaches the fetus.

“With my background in pharmacy and pharmacology, I take a translational approach so that we can look at questions from many different angles, but it’s important for me to always think about the clinical question,” says Piquette-Miller. “My research is always driven by a clinical need.”
