Teresa Scannell has worked at U of T for almost 25 years. As the career and work-life consultant at the Organizational Development and Learning Centre (ODLC), Scannell shares her five tips to getting through busy days and finding a work-life balance:

1. Identify your priorities

Keep in mind what your priorities are, as focusing on them will ensure you feel more successful and satisfied.

2. Schedule keystone time

Block out time each day to work on the most important task you need to achieve. Do not allow interruptions unless there is an emergency (a real one!).

3. Manage email carefully

Only respond to email at scheduled times each day. You will never clear your inbox and attempting to do so will distract you from important work.

4. Just say no

Every “yes” is a “no” to something else, so develop the habit of asking yourself what you are giving up in choosing to say “yes”.

5. Take refreshing breaks

Take breaks that actually rejuvenate you – a glass of water and a 5 minute walk versus a coffee and checking social media will transform your energy level.
