UTAlert: The University of Toronto's alert system
What is UTAlert?
UTAlert is the University of Toronto’s emergency notification system. During emergencies or significant disruptions to campus operations, the University uses UTAlert to quickly deliver critical information through email, SMS text and mobile app push notifications.
All current students, faculty, staff and librarians are automatically enrolled to receive UTAlert messages at their official U of T email address.
Opting in to receive SMS texts and app notifications
University of Toronto students, staff, faculty and librarians will receive email alerts automatically. To receive texts and app push notifications, you must complete both steps below:
Step 1 — Update your UTAlert profile (required for texts/phone calls)
To receive SMS texts (and optional phone calls), ensure your contact information is up to date in the “Update your UTAlert settings” module on this page.
In your UTAlert profile, you can:
- Add or update your mobile phone number (required to receive texts)
- Choose your preferred notification methods (email, SMS, phone)
- Select the campuses you want to receive alerts from
Step 2 — Download Alertable (fastest way to get alerts on your phone)
To receive push notifications, download the Alertable app. Alerts delivered through Alertable are the fastest and most reliable way to receive UTAlert messages on your mobile device.

For additional personal safety features, you can also download the Campus Safety app. It offers tools such as TravelSafer (monitored travel on or near campus), quick access to Campus Safety services and other key resources. The Campus Safety app works alongside UTAlert—UTAlert delivers urgent notifications, while Campus Safety provides personal safety tools used day-to-day.

Updating your settings
To update your settings, in the box below choose Email from the dropdown menu.
- Enter your University of Toronto email address. A validation code will be sent to your inbox.
- Enter the code in the Access Code field and select Verify.
- Once verified, you can update your:
- Mobile phone number (required for text messages
- Messaging preferences (email, SMS, phone call)
- Campus locations you want to receive alerts from
- Message types you wish to receive

It is collected for the purpose of contacting you for University messaging. At all times it will be protected in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
