Translational Biology and Engineering Program (TBEP) education committee receives 2026 Spotlight Award

The education committee of the Translational Biology and Engineering Program (TBEP) – an interdisciplinary research centre that operates out of the Ted Rogers Centre for Health Research – has been named the inaugural recipient of the Spotlight Award.

Presented by the Healthy Research Teams & Labs initiative at the Centre for Graduate Professional Development, the Spotlight Award recognizes activities that strengthen research culture by fostering welcoming, collaborative and supportive research environments across the university.

TBEP's student-led education committee was recognized for its efforts to build community, promote professional development and support trainee well-being. Since emerging in 2021, the committee has organized workshops, networking events, research exchanges, conferences and social activities that encourage collaboration, leadership development and a sense of belonging among trainees.

“Fostering positive, supportive team environments is central to graduate student success, which is why I am delighted to recognize the Translational Biology and Engineering Program (TBEP) education committee as our first Spotlight Award recipient,” said Joshua Barker, dean of the School of Graduate Studies and vice-provost, graduate research and education. “Its commitment to building an inclusive and welcoming culture shows how thoughtful efforts can strengthen research environments across the university.”

In recognition of the award, the committee will receive $1,000 from the School of Graduate Studies to support trainee-focused activities.
