| How to Diagnose SSH problems |
This is done using a simple procedure and the Telnet program included with Windows 95/98.
- From the Start Menu choose Run.
- In the Run dialog box type:
telnet splash.utcs.utoronto.ca 4357
- Click OK and the Telnet window should open with a Username: prompt.
- If you do NOT get a Username prompt, then either you do not have a working
network connection or else the SSH server at our end is not responding. If you can confirm that you have a working network connection (example, use
a web browser to go to http://www.utoronto.ca) then contact the
network Operations Centre at 978-4621 and indicate that
splash.utcs.utoronto.ca isn't responding.
- If you do get a Username: prompt, enter your normal userid that
you would use for SecurID. Don't worry if you see double letters
as you type.
- If you get an immediate disconnect when you enter your username,
check the message that should still be visible on the telnet screen. It
should clarify what sort of problem there is with your userid.
- If your userid is valid, you should see a SecurIDPasscode:
prompt. Generate a passcode using your
SecurID card and your PIN and enter the passcode and hit Enter.
- When you hit enter you should get a Connection to Host lost
dialog message BUT still displayed on the screen
should be an "Authentication successful" message indicating a
successful connection.
- There are a couple of other responses that are possible at this stage.
An "Permission denied" response message indicates that the passcode wasn't
a valid passcode. If you get a message asking for "Next Passcode"
then simply generate a new passcode using your SecurID card and enter that.
