Do I have to register every printer in my office?

No. Often a number of people can share a single printer. If a printer is to be shared, it is best to make the a "network" printer, meaning one that has its own network connection so that printing is not dependant on any one person's PC being left on for printing to work.

What kind of printer can I use? What are the minimal specs?

For the AMS systems, the minimum specifications are that the printer be HP LaserJet III compatible or else it should be PostScript compatible.

In general most inkjet printers are NOT compatible with the AMS system.

For the ROSI system, plain output should work on virtually any printer, but at rollout time there are some types of output that are specifically designed for a PostScript printer. Most users will NOT need a PostScript compatible printer. In the long term, the goal is to make the applications support both LaserJet type printers and PostScript printers.

What if I want to change the default printer, or specify which local printer to use every time I print?

In the AMS system the default printer is set using the menu path:
SYSTEM>>User Profile>>User Defaults

In the ROSI system the default printer is set by the Student Information System staff.

In both systems you can also specify the printer to use at the time you request a printout by simply keying in the desired printer name.

What if I only want to do screen prints? Do I still need to register my printer?

No. Screen prints are a "local print". Any printer that is available for local printing can be used for screen prints.

It is only jobs that are generated at the central systems (AMS and ROSI) that require a "defined" or "registered" printer.

I already use my printer to print from AMS. Do I need to register it again? Can I register one printer for both?

One printer can accept print jobs from both the AMS system and the ROSI system as long as it meets the minimum requirements.

If a printer was defined for one system and you now wish to use it for the other system then you need do need to send in a second registration.

Will we still have central printing? How can I specify what goes there, and what goes to my local printer?

On the ROSI system, the current central printer is NOT PostScript but there will be a central PostScript printer shortly. At that time you may have to use a special destination to send PostScript output to the central printer.
