Self-help Books for Learning
English as a Second Language

Fair-Use Policy

Here is a short list of published material recommended for self-instruction and reference. All are aimed specifically at people learning academic English at an advanced level. These books are all available in U. of T. Bookstore; most are also in campus libraries.

Collins Cobuild English Guides.

A compact and very clear set of guidebooks with exercises and answer keys. They come as separate books or bound in one volume. Inexpensive and well worth buying. (A slight drawback is that they use British idioms and examples.)
Frank, Marcella. Modern English: A Practical Reference Guide.
Thorough; assumes familiarity with grammatical terms. No exercises, but a workbook is available: Modern English: Exercises for Non-Native Speakers, (2 parts).
Frodesen, Jan and Janet Eyring. Grammar Dimensions, Book Four.
Chart layout, fairly simple terminology. Exercises.
Lane, J. and E. Lange. Writing Clearly: An Editing Guide.
Ten review lessons on specific problems of sentence structure, with exercises. Good for guided instruction.
Troyka, Lynn. Simon and Schuster Handbook for Writers.
An all-purpose handbook with good sections for ESL learners. There is an ESL workbook too (Alice Maclin, ESL Workbook for Writers).
