Organizational profile

The University of Toronto (UofT) is the largest university in Canada with 52,800 students, 2,900 academic faculty, and an operating budget of approximately $648 million (April 1999). The University's annual research grant and contract support is approximately $300 million. UofT offers 81 doctoral programs and 14 professional faculties that count on a number of the most renowned experts and faculty members. The university's international activities include co-operation on research and training in several areas with institutions in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Latin America. Particularly in the municipal sector, UofT has an international portfolio of approximately 75 projects in 50 countries valued at $8.1 million.

UTUI was established at UofT's Centre for Urban and Community Studies (CUCS) in 1995 to co-ordinate the university's expertise in the urban field for the development and implementation of projects in developing countries. UTUI is also engaged in building international links with public and private sector institutions involved in urban policy-making, programming, and projects. UTUI's portfolio includes 8 major projects involving 10 countries in South America and Africa, a total of approximately US$5.6 million. UTUI's outstanding expertise in international project development and technical and managerial capacity are well known to funding institutions such as CIDA, the World Bank, the Ford Foundation among others.

UTUI brings to its projects a wide range of expertise in various areas available through UofT Centres and Institutes. Expertise is available in areas such as: urban planning; environmental tourism; environmental planning, policy, engineering and management; information systems and data management; housing and housing policy; urban transportation; and, remote sensing and computer cartography. UTUI also brings the very best of relevant Canadian expertise to its projects through its network of municipal and provincial governments, non-profit organisations and the private sector, which can be subcontracted to provide assistance in the development of project activities.

UTUI's projects have focused on the development and implementation of Master Plans and Local Development Plans, local capacity-building, and given special consideration to the projects' impact on gender equity and the environment. Projects have also been developed in the areas of decentralisation and local government reform. UTUI has been successfully applying a participatory capacity-building approach to its projects, which also involves an iterative approach and results-based management techniques.
