| In Fall 2011-12, the UC Writing Centre is offering a special opportunity for students who wish to develop their skills as creative writers of fiction and non-fiction. UC's Barker Fairley Distinguished Visitor for 2011-12, award-winning writer of novels, short stories, articles, essays, and reviews Camilla Gibb, will be available to meet with UC and UC program students in free fifty-minute one-on-one sessions. | ![]() |
Camilla Gibb will be available to meet with students who
- want feedback on their written work (fiction or creative non-fiction).
- want to talk about creative process.
- want to talk about the publishing industry.
To participate, please complete the following steps:
- If you have never registered on the online booking system, register now. You do not need to make an appointment. Just provide your UTORid, password, and email address.
- After you have registered, send an email to Jerry Plotnick, the director of the UC Writing Centre, indicating that you would like to meet with Camilla Gibb. Please provide your name and student #. He will then provide you with access to the appointments with Camilla and inform you by email that you may go ahead and book.
- UC students may book appointments using the online booking system. To see all available appointments with Camilla Gibb, click the icon "View Dedicated Appointments" in the sidebar. You may book up to one appointment per week. (Note: the appointments with Camilla will be visible only after you complete step 2.) If appointments are filled, you may join the waiting list.
- Non-UC students will not be able to access Camilla's appointments via the website. If you are a non-UC student in a UC program course, you must book any appointments by phoning UC's program assistant, Khamla Sengthavy, between 9 and 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, at 416-978-8083.
Camilla Gibb's schedule: Tuesdays from 10:10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. from Sep. 27 till November 29 (excluding Oct. 11). All Camilla's appointments are in UC 216.
About Camilla Gibb:
Camilla Gibb is the author of four novels—Mouthing the Words, The Petty Details of So-and-so's Life, Sweetness in the Belly and The Beauty of Humanity Movement—as well as numerous short stories, articles and reviews. She was the winner of the Trillium Book Award in 2006, a Scotiabank Giller Prize short list nominee in 2005, winner of the City of Toronto Book Award in 2000 and the recipient of the CBC Canadian Literary Award for short fiction in 2001. Her books have been published in 18 countries and translated into 14 languages and she was named by the jury of the prestigious Orange Prize as one of 21 writers to watch in the new century.
Camilla was born in London, England, and grew up in Toronto. She has a B.A. in anthropology and Middle Eastern studies from the University of Toronto, completed her Ph.D. in social anthropology at Oxford University in 1997, and spent two years at the University of Toronto as a post-doctoral research fellow before becoming a full-time writer.
Camilla has been writer-in-residence at the University of Toronto and the University of Alberta. She is currently an adjunct faculty member of the graduate creative writing program at the University of Guelph. She recently edited the Penguin Book of Memoir and is currently at work on a memoir of her own.
