Awards for UC students:
The following three competitions are open to undergraduate students registered in University College. The deadline for all UC Writing Awards is May 1. Entries will automatically be considered in each of the competitions for which they are eligible. Click on the links for full details. An entry form is available online.
- Established in 2007 in memory of Meyer Greenstein (UC ’40), the Meyer (Mike) Greenstein Memorial Student Award for Writing Excellence offers a single prize of up to $1,000 each year for outstanding writing in an academic essay or creative work.
- Established in 1946 in memory of Norma Epstein (UC ’45), the Norma Epstein Foundation Awards in Creative Writing offer prizes up to a total of $2,000 each year in the categories of Poetry, Drama, Novel, Short Story, and Other Prose.
- Established in 1948 in memory of Professor Frederic Davidson (UC ’90), the Frederic Davidson Competition offers one prize of $1,000, one of $500, and one of $250 each year for essays dealing with English or French literature.
Awards open to all Canadian students:
Students enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in any Canadian university can apply for the biennial Norma Epstein National Award (next deadline: May 1, 2011). The sum of approximately $2,000 will be awarded every two years for substantial work in the categories of Poetry, Drama, Novel, and Short Story. An entry form is available online.
