Veronika Ambros, Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures and the Centre for Comparative Literature, University of Toronto, has published extensively on the semiotics of theatre and drama, literary theory, and modern Czech literature. Her research interests include cultural theory, German and Russian literary theory and literatures. Irina Antanasievich is a doctor filologicheskikh nauk and folklorist. She teaches Russian literature at the University of Niš (Serbia) and in Kosovska-Mitrovitsa. She is on the editorial board of the Serbian literary and cultural journal Gradina and the university journal Fakta Universitatis. She has published two monographs and many scholarly articles.

Marina Aptekman received her Ph.D in Slavic Languages from Brown University in 2003. Her dissertation was entitled "Kabbalah and Russian Cultural History: From Religious Mythopoetics to Political Myth". She is currently working at Brandeis University where she teaches all levels of Russian as well as Russian Literature and Film. Her articles appeared in Sign System Studies, Russian Review, Die Welt der Slawen and other scholarly journals.

Yanina Arnold graduated from the University of Idaho in May 2004 with an M.A. in English, and is currently working on her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at the University of South Carolina. Her research interests include 20th century Russian literature and critical theory. Cynthia Ashperger was born in Zagreb, Croatia. She holds a BFA from the Academy for Film, Television, and Theatre (now the Academy for the Dramatic Arts) at the University of Zagreb and an MA from the University of Toronto where she is currently a PhD candidate. Ms. Ashperger has twenty years' experience as an actor and ten years' as an acting teacher. She currently holds a tenure-track position as an Acting Professor at the Ryerson Theatre School in Toronto (Ryerson University). Since 2000 her main interest has been Michael Chekhov's acting technique. She is currently working on a doctoral thesis titled "Michael Chekhov's Acting Technique in Contemporary Pedagogy and Practice." This year Ms. Ashperger will be presenting her paper "Spirituality in Michael Chekhov" at the Michael Chekhov International Conference (MICHA) in Amsterdam. She will also be receiving her Chekhov Technique certificate from MICHA at that time. Her other recent conference presentation was titled "Bunuel and Brecht: Liberating the Audience," which was presented at the conference Transcultural Imaginary of Luis Bunuel at the University of Ottawa in 2001.

Michel Aucouturier is a Professor Emeritus at the Sorbonne, a translator and literary specialist. Konstantin Azadovskii,Ph.D. is a member of the International Rilke Society and of the Swiss and West German Section of the International PEN Club; he is a Corresponding Member of the German Academy of Language and Literature (Darmstadt) and President of the Executive Committee of the St. Petersburg PEN Club. His research into the reception of Russian literature in the West, primarily in Germany, has uncovered many new facts connected with Rilke's ?Russian period?: his trips to Russia, his work as a translator and as a propagandist of Russian culture; his correspondence with Pasternak and Tsvetaeva. His other main area of scholarship has been the Russian poets of the Silver Age: Bal'mont, Blok, Bely, Kliuev and others. He is the author of many books, articles and scholarly monographs. In 1989 he was awarded the Friedrich Gundolf Prize of the German Academy of Language and Literature; in 1990-91 he held a scholarship at the Berlin Academy (Wissenschaftskolleg); in 1991 he won a prize from the Austrian Ministry of Culture and Art; in 1995 he was awarded a Humboldt Prize; and in 1999 he received a Fulbright Grant (USA). Brian James Baer is Associate Professor of (Russian) Translation at Kent State University, where he teaches courses in both the theory and practice of translation. He is co-editor with Geoffrey S. Koby of Volume XII of the ATA Monograph Series, Beyond the Ivory Tower: Rethinking Translation Pedagogy (John Benjamins, 2003) and is the general editor of the Kent State Monograph Series in Translation Studies. Michael Basker is Professor of Russian Literature at the University of Bristol. He has published widely on Russian poetry of the Silver Age and Pushkin period, and is a co-editor of N. S. Aleksei Bartoshevich, Ph. D., professor, and Winner of the Stanislavskii Prize, studied with the best specialists in Western theatre, including G. N. Boiadzhiev and A. A. Anikst, while completing his doctoral thesis, Shakespeare's Comedies at GITIS (now RATI). He is currently the leading Russian expert on Shakespeare, member of the International Shakespeare Association, and combines his teaching activities at RATI with his work at the State Institute of Art History. Besides his activities as a scholar and a teacher, Dr. Bartoshevich actively participates in Russian theatre life: he served as the secretary of the Union of Theatre Workers and as the vice president of the International Theatre Institute's Committee for Theatre Education. Dr. Bartoshevich has also served on juries for numerous theatre festivals and publishes regularly on theatre. Since the mid-90s he has presented a series of television programs about Shakespeare and English theatre.

Dennis Beck is a theatre historian whose areas of research include Czech theatre, theatre censorship,acting theory and history, and the function of theatre in a mediatized world. Yury Borev is a literary specialist and philosopher-aesthetician. A doktor nauk in philology, he is head of the Literary Theory Section in the Institute of World Literature (IMLI), Moscow. He is author of over thirty books which have been translated into thirty-six languages; these include scholarly studies (Komicheskoe, O tragicheskom, Estetika) and popular novels (Staliniada, XX vek v predaniikh i anekdotakh).

Irina Borisova completed a dissertation on inter-mediality and the thematics of music in the literature of Russian romanticism. She has published a series of articles on musical and mystical subtexts in Odoevsky and Pushkin and on the poetics of musical instruments and the metalanguage of aesthetics and criticism of romanticism. She is a member of the Department of Aesthtics and Ethics in the Philosophy Faculty of St. Petersburg University. Her most recent works deal with the Venetian theme in Rozanov, the poetics of Krzhizhanovsky, and with contemporary prose and poetry.

Franc Chamberlain, Senior Lecturer in Performance Studies at University College, Northampton, UK. He is a scholar and artist in the field of performance with a specific interest in the performer's creativity. A former editor of Contemporary Theatre Review and Contemporary Theatre Studies, he is currently series editor for Routledge Performance Practitioners. Bogdan Czaykowski is Professor Emeritus at the University of British Columbia where for many years he was Chair of the Slavic Department and of the Program of European Studies. A highly acclaimed poet, he is author of Trzciny trzcionek (1957), Reductio ad absurdum (1958), Sura (1961), Spor z granicami (1964), Point-no-Point (1971), Wiatr z innej strony (1990), Okanagańskie sady (1998). Mgr. art. Pavol Janík, PhD. has worked at the Ministry of Culture (1983-87), in the media, and in advertising. Between 1998 and 2000 he was the selector of the Yugoslav national theatrical festival Sterijino Pozorje and from 2000 to 2001 he was the head of the Drama Department at the Serbian National Theatre (Novi Sad). Krzysztof Koehler (b. 1963) is a poet, essayis and scholar. His volumes of poetry include Wiersze (1990), Nieudana pielgrzymka (1993), Partyzant prawdy (1996), Na krancu dlugiego pola (1998), and Trzecia czesc; he has also published articles and essays. His writings have appeared in Fronda, bruLion, and Arkana. He has taught at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, where he defended his doctoral dissertation in 1994, as well as at Rice Univesity and the University of Illinois in Chicago. He now teaches at the Cardinal Wyszynski University in Warsaw.

He was awarded the Andrei Bely Prize in 1978 and the Pushkin Prize-Grant in 1990. Vadim Perelmuter is a poet, literary historian, essayist and translator. Began publishing in 1965. His first volume of poetry "Diary" came out in 1984 and since then he has published two more poetry volumes (1991 and 1997) and a book on Vyazemskii (1993). In all he has contributed to around 20 books, including volumes on Vyazemskii, Sluchevskii, Krzhizhanovskii, Shengeli, Shteinberg, Khodasevich and others, - as compiler, textologist, or author of introductions and commentaries. He has published over 100 articles in periodicals. Perelmuter also worked for 15 years (from 1977) on the editorial staff of "Literature Education". Andrei Siniavsky was a literary scholar who published his first critical writings in 1948. His books include Picasso (Moscow, 1960, co-authored with M. In August 1973 he and his family emigrated to France; from 1973 to 1994 he was a professor of Russian literature at the Sorbonne. Tamara Trojanowska is Associate Professor, Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Toronto. Her interests include 20th-century Polish literature, Slavic drama and theatre, modernity and postmodernity, and the discourse on identity and nationalism. Professor Trojanowska has published numerous articles on contemporary Polish and Czech drama and theater in Poland, Great Britain, Canada, and the United States and co-authored Quest for a New Theater. Her book, Identity on Trial: Gombrowicz, Różewicz and Mrożek and the Discourses of Modernity, is forthcoming.

Semen Vaiman is a Ph.D. and member of the Russian Akademiia Gumantarnykh Nauk. Evgenii Vitkovskii is a literary scholar, poet, prose writer and translator. He completed studies in Art History at Moscow University. He began publishing in 1969 in Moscow and, at about the same time, in the West under a variety of pseudonyms (although since 1986 only under his own name). He is the author of many studies on the translation of poetry, Russian emigre poetry and European poetry. He edited the anthologies My zhili togda na planete drugoi (1994-97), Strofy veka - 2, a collection of world poetry translated by Russian poets (1998), Sem' vekov frantsuzskoi poezii (1999), and others. He has also edited the collected works of poets such as Rainer Maria Rilke, Charles Baudelaire, Francois Villon, Rudyard Kipling, and John Keats. Andrei Volos made his debut as a poet in the journal Pamir in 1979. He has translated poetry from the Tajik language. Colin Wright, Professor Emeritus of Russian Studies at Queen's University, has written widely on Russian and comparative literature, with a major book on Mikhail Bulgakov, and has published stories in various Canadian and British literary magazines. He also writes plays and novels. He was the 1993 winner in the Special Merit Category of Theatre BC's National Playwriting Competition for this adaptation of Lieutenant Kizhe and was a finalist in last year's competition with a play Germany Calling! -nbsp; -mdash; about the British traitor known as Lord Haw-Haw. Lary Zappia (BFA University of Belgrade, MFA University of Calgary) is an international freelance theatre director. He has staged over 30 different productions (ranging from opera and musical to drama and vaudeville) in countries as diverse as Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Lithuania, Italy, and Canada. He has worked professionally both in "fossilized" institutions (like national theatres) and with non-mainstream "free" groups. Besides freelancing, he occasionally works as an acting and directing instructor and as a translator. For eight years he was also a member of the Board of the Dramatic Theatre Committee at the International Theatre Institute (ITI/UNESCO). He is currently in his third year of the Ph.D. program at the Graduate Centre for Study of Drama at the University of Toronto.

Krzysztof Zarzecki studied Polish and English at the University of Warsaw. He has worked as an editor and publisher for several publishing houses in Poland, among them Czytelnik, Iskry, and PIW. He has been a member of the new Association of Polish Writers since 1989 and of the Association of Polish Translators and Interpreters since 1984, serving as President of the latter's Section of Literary Translators from 1985 to 1987. Mr. Zarzecki has translated over 30 volumes of British, American, and Canadian authors, including John Dos Passos, Truman Capote, J.D. Salinger, Tennessee Williams, and Carol Shields, into Polish. His translations have been awarded prizes by the Polish Association of Translators, the Association of Authors (Warsaw), and the Turzanski Foundation (Toronto). He has also edited two anthologies of modern American short stories and an anthology of Western stories. He presently divides his time between Toronto and Warsaw.

Zholkovskii, Aleksandr. Aleksandr Zholkovskii is a literary specialist and writer. He graduated from the Faculty of Philology of the Moscow State University in 1959 and completed his doctoral degree in the University's Institute of Asian and African Studies in 1966. In 1979 he left the Soviet Union and currently resides in Los Angeles, where he is a Professor at the University of Southern California. He has written over ten monographs in the fields of linguistics and literature studies, including volumes on Babel (in conjunction with M. Iampolskii, 1994) and Zoshchenko (1999), and two volumes of prose: NRZB. Stories (Moscow, 1991) and Memoir Vignettes and other Non-Fictions (2000).

Zoran Zivković was born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, in 1948. In 1973 he graduated from the Department of General Literature with the theory of literature, Faculty of Philology of the University of Belgrade; he received his master's degree in 1979 and his doctorate in 1982 from the same school.
