Projections 2: An International Disability Film Festival, part of the Abilities Arts Festival. Through the power of film, Projections 2 provides a forum for the examination of ideas, myths, fears and attitudes as portrayed by people with disabilities. Projections 2 provides an opportunity to engage, stimulate discussion, challenge perceptions and expand awareness or simply entertain. MGM presents an advance screening of Lions for Lambs. 7pm start. Rush seating available for those without passes.

 


November 8-11

The 5th annual Toronto Japanese Short Film Festival. The theme of this year's festival is "Life is short, work hard!" TJSFF offers 38 films and many of them treat the intense 'salaryman' focus of modern Japanese culture. This theme is approached from many angles: examinations of 'business manner', battles for success, and life on the margins are just some of the subjects for the drama, satire and experimentation found throughout the 5 programs. www.tjsff.ca

 

Friday November 9

The Ontario Ministry of the Environment presents a screening of An Inconvenient Truth (10:30am) and Sharkwater (1:00pm). Free admission.

 

Sunday November 11

Thursday November 22

The Petro Jacyk Program for the Study of Ukraine at U of T presents "Between a Rock and a Hard Place: Ukrainian Cinema since Independence," a lecture and film series. This evening will showcase "New Films and New Names from Ukraine". The program presents recent and never before screened in Canada films: Bozhychi,  by Anastasia Kharchenko, Prison Mamas, by Taras Tomenko, Heaven, by Nadia Koshman, as well as the critically acclaimed and much talked about Taxi Driver, by the newest Ukrainian cinematographic sensation Roman Bondarchuk. 7pm, free admission. http://www.utoronto.ca/jacyk/ukrcinema/index.html

The 5th annual Bengali Film Festival is presented to create awareness of Bengali arts and culture through films. The Festival also hopes to raise funds for Bengali studies at the University of Toronto. In addition to the exciting offering of Bengali and other South Asian films there will be a Silent Auction on Saturday, Nov 24. Films screen 12 - 5:30pm Saturday, and 12 - 6:30pm on Sunday. The Diaspora Film Festival, an art forum dedicated to the celebration of the diversity of films and videos made by those cineastes living and working outside their countries of origin.
