CERES presents the first full screening of Reconstructing Prokofiev, a major new documentary exploring the complex mind and troubled career of composer Sergei Prokofiev. The Toronto Film Society presents a double bill, starting at 2pm: Always Goodbye (1938, 75 min. Directed by Sidney Lanfield, with Barbara Stanwyck and Herbert Marshall). The harsh realities of life plague a young woman when she is forced to give up her baby. She goes on to a new life and career but a hole still remains in her heart. Stanwyck at her finest in a sensitive and moving performance. Followed by The Lady Gambles (1949, 98 min. Directed by Michael Gordon, with Barbara Stanwyck and Robert Preston). One night at the tables in Vegas, "the Babylon of the Desert," is enough to send a happy woman's life down the spiral of despair to seedy men, degraded addiction, and back alley gambling. The Toronto Film Society presents a double bill, starting at 7pm: The Night of January 16 (1941, 79 min. Directed by William Clemons, with Robert Preston and Ellen Drew). The tycoon can't explain the missing $20 million to his board and is murdered. The secretary has a "personal" interest and is a suspect. The sailor who just wants to sail off into the sunset has just got to solve it all. Adapted from an Ayn Rand play, this engaging mystery unfurls the evidence in deceptive ways. Followed by Train of Events (1949, 89 min. Directed by S. Cole, C. Crichton, and B. Dearden, with Valerie Hobson and Jack Warner). In this portmanteau of four stories a la Dead of Night, the riveting tales of passengers' lives unfold as a train hurls them towards the different destinies that await them. The 3rd Annual Toronto-Romanian Film Festival will explore the intricacies, modes, and relational realities of adaptation, as they manifest themselves socially, politically, and economically. Visit here for screening schedule and more information.

 

Monday February 8

The Toronto Film Society presents a double bill, starting at 7pm: King Solomon's Mines (1937, 80 min. Directed by Robert Stephenson, with Paul Robeson and Cedric Hardwicke). The majestic Robeson as the mysterious native guide fills the screen with his star quality in the first and best screen version of the adventures of Allan Quatermain and the lost diamond mines. Followed by Seven Angry Men (1952, 90 min. Directed by Charles Marquis Warren, with Raymond Massey and Jeffrey Hunter). The abolition movement in 19th century Kansas turns violent at the hands of fanatic John Brown and sons.  Massey's vivid and committed portrayal captures the intensity of Brown's soul. "Between a Rock and a Hard Place: Ukrainian Cinema Since Independence" is a screening and lecture series focusing on Ukrainian cinema as it tries to shake off the crippling legacy of the Soviet past and adapt to today's fast-moving reality. The Toronto Film Society presents a double bill, starting at 2pm: One Night of Love (1934, 84 min. Directed by Victor Schertzinger, with Grace Moore and Tullio Carminati). A young opera diva and her over-demanding mentor/teacher develop a rocky relationship that may tip into hate or love.  Dazzling excerpts from Carmen and Madame Butterfly by the great Metropolitan opera star elevate this into a musical masterpiece. Followed by The Cat and the Fiddle (1934, 90 min. Directed by William K. Howard, with Jeanette MacDonald and Ramon Novarro). A visually inventive screen version of the Kern and Hammerstein operetta.  An aspiring singer is waylaid in her love for a temperamental composer by her big break. "Harsh Light: Queer Stage-to-Screen Adaptations in Québec and Canada" is a Tuesday screening and lecture series presented by Graduate Centre for Study of Drama Sexual Diversity Studies (University of Toronto). Il était une fois dans l’est, a pioneering work of queer Québec cinema from 1974, screens at 6pm in a rare 35mm print donated by the Cinémathèque québécoise. At 8pm, Cinema Studies co-presents a talk by Thomas Waugh (Concordia University), called "Acting Up, Acting Out: Staging & Screening Queer Canada." Visit here for more information.
