High Speed
Internet with the SMC Resnet
All SMC Residents get free high speed internet access
throught the SMC Residence Network (or SMC Resnet).
The SMC Resnet is a high speed ethernet network that
connects the SMC Residence to UofT's network 'backbone'
and the internet. Elmsley
Hall (First Floor, Mallon House, McBrady House,
and Soulerin House), the
Queen's
Park Building (Fisher House, More House and Teefy
House), Sorbara
Hall Student Residence (all floors), and the Historic
Houses are all connected
to the SMC Resnet.
You'll find everything you need to know about the SMC Resnet
below, just click on each question to view the answer.
The SMC Resnet provides high speed access to the Internet,
the UofT, and other Resnet users. You can use the SMC Resnet to send and receive email, surf the web, transfer
files, read newsgroups, chat, play games and share resources (like printers) with friends. In fact, using the
SMC Resnet is just like using a commercial Internet service provider - but without the hourly, or monthly fee.
Getting connected to the SMC Resnet is a simple three-step process:
- Before you come to residence, make sure
your computer has the necessary hardware and software
to connect to the network. You will need:
- A network
card that is compatible with a 10BASE-T network;
-
A connecting cable consisting of 2 RJ-45 connectors
on a cat5e patch cable (i.e. one of the blue networking
cables sold at most computer stores);
- A properly
licenced and up-to-date operating system, since your
computer will be scanned by the Resnet security server
to check for properly licensed and updated software
when you first try to connect to the residence
network.
- After you arrive in residence you'll
need to physically connect your computer to the network
by plugging one end of the blue networking cable
into your computer and the other into the network
jack in your room.
- Once you've connected your computer to the network a web browser window
should automatically appear asking you to fill out
some contact information and consent to our Network
Use Agreement. Your computer will also be scanned by the Resnet Security
server to make sure you have a properly licenced and up-to-date
operating system. If your software is not correctly
licensed or up-to-date- you will need to update it. You
may also have to download anti-virus software, which
is available free of charge through UTORProtect.
You must complete this last step before you
will be able to connect to any external internet sites.
Once you have completed the on-line form and downloaded the appropriate software you should be ready to connect. If you have trouble getting connected or staying connected, please consult our Technical
Support Section.
Everyone who uses the SMC Resnet must agree to and comply with the Network Use Agreement.

If you think there is an error in your network usage
statistics, as reported by IP
Audit, or if you notice odd behaviour relating to
your network traffic, or attempts to gain unauthorized
access to your computer over the Internet, please report
them to the SMC Network Administrator
immediately.
