SMC Residence: Meal Plans & Food Service

Food Service

One of the great things about living in residence is not having to buy groceries, prepare food, cook meals or clean up when you’re done. At St. Mike’s we take care of all these chores for you – what could be more convenient! Another benefit about residence is getting to eat all your meals in the company of good friends. With its oak-paneled walls and decorative crests, the Canada Room is truly the heart and soul of the SMC residence. Our Food Service department is run by Chartwells, who provide a remarkable array of nutritious, balanced choice and tasty entrées.

The food is of high quality and features:

The Canada Room

Located in Brennan Hall, the Canada Room Dining Hall first opened in 1939. With its oak-paneled walls, original 19th Century artwork and decorative crests, the Canada Room is the heart and soul of the SMC residence.

Meal Plans and Menus

All residents must subscribe to a meal plan as there are no cooking facilities in any of our residence buildings. For specific details on our plans, dining hours and menus, please see the St. Michael's College - Chartwells Web Site. | Meal plan prices are included in SMC Residence room fees and are detailed in Residence Fees.

Bag lunches

Bag lunches are available Monday to Friday for those with academic commitments that prevent them from attending the regular meal time. We ask that you give the cashier 24 hours notice or email ashlee.arscott@compass-canada.com when requesting bag meals.

Guests

Residents are encouraged to bring guests to the Canada Room but they will be required to pay the regular cash price for their meals.

Policy on Missed Meals

Since our meal plan is priced on the assumption that all students will miss a certain percentage of their meals, we are unable to issue refunds for missed meals.

What Plans are Offered?

St Mike's offers continuous dining with three meal plan options:

Both 5 day plans cost the same, and are a good choice for residents who plan to go home on weekends. The 7 day plan offers the best value and flexibility, and gives you access to all the meals we serve.

When are Meals Offered?

The Residence Meal Plan runs during the normal residence term. Meals in the first term begin with breakfast on the day after Move-In Day, and continue until 24 hours after your final exam in December. During the second term, meals begin on the first day of Arts & Science classes, and end 24 hours after your final exam in April. Meal service includes the Thanksgiving and Easter

Getting Set Up

You select the meal plan you want when you receive your Official Offer of Residence Accommodation. (Its one of the forms you complete and return to the Dean of Students).

Your University of Toronto “T-Card” (aka your Robarts Library Card) is also your Meal Card. Chartwells will set up your meal plan with your T-Card automatically, but you need to get your T-Card before they can activate your meal plan. To avoid delays, get your T-Card before August 10th. Chartwells will do the rest.

How the Meal Plan works

The Canada Room is an all-you-care-to-eat facility. When you enter the Dining Room, the cashier will scan your T-Card, which is also your Meal Card. Once in the Dining Room, you may choose whatever you wish to eat from the range of possibilities offered & come back for seconds.

The only thing we ask is that (to help us reduce waste) you only select one hot entrée at a time. But remember: you can return to the hot line as many times as you wish. Also, please note that you cannot take food out of the Canada Room. (Except for ice-cream cones, which you can finish as you walk.)

T-Card Rules

There are a few common sense rules governing the use of T-Cards.

  1. T-Cards cannot be lent to others (even if they are Meal Plan holders and students themselves).
  2. There are no refunds for meals not taken in a given week for the weekly plans or for the academic meal plan meals not used by the end of the occupancy period.
  3. You may use Flex Dollars in the Canada Room, to buy an extra meal for a friend for instance, and at any participating SMC or Sodexho outlets here at St Michael’s College or other locations on the St George Campus.
  4. You may add Flex Dollars to your plan if you find you are running out. Flex Dollars may be purchased on $25 units at the Food Service office on the second floor of Brennan Hall. We accept VISA, debit, cheque or of course cash.
  5. There are no refunds for meals not taken or Flex Dollars not “spent” by the end of
    the residence occupancy period.

All residents have an opportunity to discuss menus, the quality of service, and special needs with Chartwells’ Director of Food Services for St Michael’s College, Ashlee Arscott. Students may also discuss concerns, pass on compliments or make suggestions to the Director of Food Service or The Food Service Manager at regularly scheduled meetings. At all times in the Canada Room, the Director of Food Service, the Food Service Manager or a Supervisor is available to discuss special issues.
