St. Michael's College, U of T

On Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. the University of St. Michael’s College in the University of Toronto at its Theology Convocation will confer the honorary doctorate of Sacred Letters on three distinguished individuals.

Professor John L. Esposito
The honour is intended to recognize Professor Esposito’s remarkable contributions to Islamic studies which, worldwide, have promoted a better understanding of political and religious Islam.

Professor Susannah Heschel
The honour is intended to recognize Professor Heschel for her many scholarly achievements in the field of Jewish studies, and in particular her expertise in the area of Jewish-Christian relations in Germany during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Sister Marion Norman, IBVM, PhD (Posthumously)
The honour is intended to recognize Sr./Dr. Norman’s many years dedicated to teaching at St. Michael’s College and the University of Alberta, and her strong support of our Continuing Education division.  We also want to recognize the 400th Anniversary of the Loretto Sisters and to celebrate the very significant role that they have played in the growth and development of the University of St. Michael’s College.

Founded in 1852, St. Michael’s is federated with the University of Toronto and is Canada’s largest and oldest English speaking Catholic university. The Chancellor, His Grace Thomas Collins, Archbishop of Toronto, will preside and confer the degrees. Students will be receiving degrees in theology in conjunction with the Toronto School of Theology and the University of Toronto.

The Continuing Education Division will also be awarding certificates in Youth Ministry, Chaplaincy Studies, and Corporate Social Responsibility.
