This page lists movies set in Germany or about Germans, as well as movies produced in Germany or by German directors.

    This film dramatizes the last years of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German Lutheran minister who spoke out against Hitler, participated in the German resistance, and paid for his convictions when the Nazis hanged him in 1945.     A dramatization of the controversial 1971 "Stanford Prison Experiment" which tested the psychological effects of prison life. Twelve men volunteered as prisoners, eight as guards. The laws by which the outside world are governed soon give way to a twisted morality based on fear and dominance; after six days, the two-week experiment is aborted. In German with English subtitles.

  • The Last Laugh = Der Letzte Mann

    The story of a hotel doorman who is demoted to washroom attendant because of his age. Humiliated, he considers suicide but then, by a strange twist of fate, he becomes a millionaire. This silent film is told entirely by camera, without title cards.

    This classic of German silent cinema tells a Scandinavian legend of love, valour and revenge. To win the hand of Kriemhild, Siegfried must win a bride for her brother, King Gunther. But the noble qualities of the first film (Siegfried) become liabilities in the second (Kriemhild's Revenge), as the blood oaths and vows of loyalty bring about the slaughter of entire armies. Directed by Fritz Lang.

    Narrated by Ian Holm, this documentary tells the true story of Kurt Gerron, a well-known German-Jewish actor, director and cabaret star in 1920s and '30s Berlin who was captured by the Nazis, sent to a concentration camp, and ordered to write and direct a pro-Nazi propaganda film. Directed by Malcolm Clarke and Stuart Sender.

    A film crew in Portugal runs out of film while making a version of Roger Corman's The Day the World Ended. When the producer suddenly vanishes, the director travels to Los Angeles to find him and finally finish the film. What he uncovers is unsettling.

    Set on the fringes of Victorian London, this film tells the story of Macheath, an amoral underworld figure who attempts to woo a girl whose father in turn wants to see him hanged. Based on the classic Brecht-Weill musical drama, and presented in both its German and French versions with optional English subtitles.

    Commissioned by Adolf Hitler, this film records the 1934 Nazi party rally in Nuremberg. Gatherings, marches, parades, and speeches by Hitler, Goering, Goebbels, and Hess are included as well as samples of monumental architecture designed by Albert Speer. Audiotrack in German with optional English subtitles. Directed by Leni Riefenstahl.
