The Gulag in Literature

Course description:
The course examines texts written by former prisoners of Russian labour camps and the Gulag in the 19th and 20th centuries. Topics covered include the history of imprisonment and exile in Russia, the use of literary texts as historical documents, approaches to narrative and genre (novel, short story, memoir, etc.) in the texts studied.
