CANADIAN ASSOCIATION OF SLAVISTS

ASSOCIATION CANADIENNE des SLAVISTES

CAS Student Essay Prizes

Once again the Canadian Association of Slavists is offering awards for the best student essays—undergraduate AND graduate—completed during the calendar year 2001.

Papers from any discipline relating to the region of Central and Eastern Europe are eligible, and they will be assessed by an inter-disciplinary committee.

Students submitting papers must have been enrolled as undergraduate or graduate students in an educational institution in Canada during the 2001 calendar year.

The papers submitted may have been written in connection with course work, thesis or dissertation research, for presentation at scholarly meetings, etc.

Each submission should be accompanied by a letter of nomination from a faculty member involved with the student's supervision.

Faculty are encouraged to publicize this opportunity to their students and colleagues.

The winner in the competition will receive a one-year paid membership in the Canadian Association of Slavists, and a $250 help grant to cover expenses for participation in a scholarly conference of the student's choice. Additionally, the winning submission will be considered for publication in Canadian Slavonic Papers.

Submission should be no longer than 35 pages, double-spaced, and "anonymous" on paper to facilitate a blind assessment. Three copies should be sent to the address below, to be received no later than 1 April 2002.

Previous winners:

1997/1998: Heather DeHaan (University of Toronto): "Russia's Rebirth: The Spiritual Aspect of Enlightment"; and Tawnia Sanford (Carleton University): "The Creation of Criminal Russia". Articles based on both submissions were published in volume 41, nos. 3-4 (Sept.-Dec. 1999).

1998/1999: Peter Waisberg (Carleton University): "A Citizenship Law for Tatarstan." (not yet published)

2000: Denis Kozlov (University of Toronto): "The Leningrad Martyrology: A Note on the Statistics of 1937 Executions in Leningrad City and Region." Forthcoming.
