Solomea Pavlychko Stipend

On the initiative of Prof. George Luckyj, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures of the University of Toronto has established the Solomea Pavlychko Stipend. This stipend will be awarded to a scholar or writer from Ukraine who will come to the University of Toronto for a period of creative work and research. The money raised for this purpose will be used in its entirety for the support of the stipend recipient. The size of the stipend and the possibility of further stipends in subsequent years will depend on the amount that can be raised. The selection of a stipend recipient and all decisions regarding this stipend will be made by a committee created for this purpose in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures.

Solomea Pavlychko was an outstanding and very productive scholar. Her scholarship is represented by numerous scholarly works in Ukrainian and English and by her literary translations into Ukrainian. Ukrainian literature is much richer for her efforts. But beyond her published work, Solomea was a living example in Ukrainian literary studies of the fruitful cooperation and interaction between literary specialists in Ukraine and those, whether Ukrainianists or not, outside Ukraine. Her example taught a valuable lesson about the need for this interaction and the benefits from it for Ukrainian literature. Therefore, the Solomea Pavlychko Stipend is a particularly appropriate vehicle for memorializing Solomea Pavlychko and continuing the work she had begun. Everyone who knew Solomea and those who did not are invited to support Prof. Luckyj's initiative with a generous donation to the Solomea Pavlychko Stipend. Please urge your friends to donate also.
