The countries of the Slavic world have played a prominent role in international life, and have produced numerous writers, musicians, philosophers, and scientists of note. In Canada, vast immigration from Slavic cultures over the last century has contributed greatly to our cultural mosaic. In our department you can study one of the broadest ranges of Slavic languages and literatures available in North American universities.

We offer undergraduate and graduate (both MA and PhD) programs in Croatian, Czech, Polish, Russian, Serbian and Ukrainian Languages and Literatures as well as a graduate program in Slavic Linguistics and undergraduate courses in Macedonian. The department is also home to Finno-Ugric studies (Estonian and Finnish). Many of our undergraduate literature and culture courses are taught in English and do not require special linguistic preparation. We also maintain close contacts with the Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies, which promotes interdisciplinary scholarship in the affairs of all the countries of the Slavic world (not exclusively Russia, as its name might suggest), primarily in the social sciences. As of 2009-2010, all Hungarian courses are administered by the Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies.

On this web site you will find information about the department, degree programs, courses, language programs, faculty, staff, and students, and latest news and events at the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures.
