Dr. Robert Buckman lives in Toronto, Canada, where
he is a medical oncologist at the Princess Margaret Hospital, and a
full Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto.
He is also an Adjunct Professor at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center,
University of Texas.
He qualified as a physician from Cambridge University
in 1972, completed his training in medical oncology at The Royal Marsden
Hospital in London
and emigrated to Toronto in 1985.
For the last twenty-five years he has also had
a second career in communication and broadcasting, presenting television
science-and medicine programs in Britain and then Canada, including
his series Magic or Medicine? for which he won a Gemini award.
He
is the author of fifteen books including How to Break Bad News,
a medical textbook for physicians and healthcare professionals, What
You Really Need To Know About Cancer a comprehensive guide for
patients and their families, Not Dead Yet an autobiography,
Can We Be Good Without God? Biology, Behavior and the Need to
Believe,
which was a national best-seller, “I
Don’t
Know What to Say…” How to Help and Support Someone Who
is Dying, Magic or Medicine?, and Human Wildlife.
His most recent book is Cancer is a Word, Not a Sentence.
