The Hon. Marion Boyd
Former Minister and Attorney General,
Province of Ontario.
Chair and Coordinator,
Task Force on the Health Effect of Woman Abuse,

Middlesex-London Health Unit, Ontario.

Elected in 1990 as the Member of Provincial Parliament for London Centre, Marion Boyd served in the Cabinet of the Bob Rae government as Minister of Education, Minister of Community and Social Services, Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues and Attorney General. Re-elected in 1995, Marion became the critic for health, justice and women’s issues until her defeat in June 1999. In October 1999, Marion was appointed as an adjudicator for the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board and is now serving a third term on that body. In June 2004, Marion was asked to lead a Review of the Arbitration Act as it applies to family and inheritance law, with special reference to the use of religious laws in arbitration; the report of the Review was released on December 20, 2004. The government has subsequently brought forward legislation to ensure that family law matters in Ontario are dealt with according to Ontario and Canadian law.

Marion Boyd is the Chair and Coordinator of the Task Force on the Health Effects of Woman Abuse, a project initiated in 1999 by the Middlesex-London Health Unit. She is the author of the Task Force Report and provides training, public education and coordination for the province-wide initiative to implement the Routine Universal Comprehensive Screening Protocol (RUCS) for the early identification of woman abuse. Marion chairs the Board of the Speers Society and is co-author of the Society’s program, “Choices for Positive Youth Relationships.” Marion developed her national and international reputation for expertise and advocacy on abuse of women and children while she was the Executive Director of the London Battered Women’s Advocacy Clinic (now known as the London Abused Women’s Centre) from 1984 to 1990.

As a former Attorney General, Marion Boyd is an ex-officio Life Bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada, where she serves on the Government Relations Committee and co-chairs the Access to Justice Committee. Marion was a member of the Paralegal Task Group, which recommended that the Law Society become the regulator of paralegals in Ontario. She also represents the Treasurer of the Law Society on the Ontario Justice Education Network and is a trustee of the Law Society Foundation.
