The purpose of the Seniors Quality of Life website is to:
We have included features that, while they are not 'readable' by alternative technologies or older systems, they do make the site more attractive for others. However, the same information about the project is available to everyone. There are some pages, most specifically minutes of committee meetings, that are listed in the principal site but are not included in the text-only version. This is because of the convenience of converting reports to PDF format, which currently is not well supported by alternative technologies, and because the main purpose for posting them is for review by committee members. The regular updates posted by the regional sites will contain the important elements of the committee meetings, so again, there will be no significant difference in the information that is available.
One final note: although there have been recent developments in coding structures that make sites accessible to alternative technologies, these methods are only useful on systems capable of running the most recent browser software. In other words, we still had the problem of ensuring access for people using older systems. Plus, these methods of coding prevented us from exploring other aspects of internet communications and presentations. After much deliberation, it was decided the best way to serve the most people was to develop the text-only version of the site.
top of pageIf you wish to view our site with all the features, you will need to download the plug-ins from the world wide web. Plug-ins are essentially small programs that enable web browsers (eg., Netscape, Internet Explorer) to activate files created with different software. Two of the most common of these are Adobe Acrobrat Reader and Macromedia's Shockwave Player. The Adobe Acrobat Reader views text files that have already been formatted in a word processing program. The Shockwave player allows you to view animations and hear sound files created with Macromedia software.
These plug-ins are not required for you to view the basic content of the site. However, some documents, such as minutes of committee meetings, are posted in the Adobe PDF format, for which you will need Adobe Reader. We will be adding a presentation in the Shockwave format in the coming weeks and the Shockwave player will be required for viewing it. Both of these downloads are useful to have as more and more sites are making use of them.
The process for downloading these files is accomplished in 3 steps:
| Step
1: Go to Site
Click on the plug-in you wish to download and you will "go" to the indicated web site |
Step
2: Download
Click on the download link at Macromedia's or Adobe's site. The files will be saved to your hard drive. A window will appear indicating where the files will be stored. Make a note of this. |
Step
3: Install
Exit from your browser program. (Netscape Navigator, Internet Explorer, etc.). Locate the files just saved on your hard drive and double click on them. The program will be installed onto your computer. Return to your web browser and the Seniors' Quality of Life website. |
