Overview
In April, 1999, the Seniors Quality of Life Project began its two year
program of research into the quality of life of seniors in 8 cities across
Canada.
Seniors groups in Halifax, Québec City, Montréal, Ottawa,
Toronto, Regina, Whitehorse and Vancouver are organizing and carrying out
a series of public consultations on issues and factors affecting the quality
of life and well-being of seniors.
Project Goals
- to collect information about the factors affecting seniors' quality of life
- to develop and implement a means by which Canadian seniors in urban areas can work to influence public policies
that affect their quality of life
We will begin working towards
these goals through:
- focus groups
- interviews and seniors' surveys
- community consultations
Over the next few months, the project will build upon our current understanding
of how the lives of Canada's seniors are affected by individual, community,
and societal factors.
Seniors themselves are in the best position to describe their own lives
and to suggest how their quality of life might be improved. Thus a participatory
approach -- seniors directing the activities of the project -- was developed.
This ensures that the project reflects the perspectives of individual seniors
and seniors' organizations.
Seniors in each of the eight cities are supported in their work by a
local project coordinator and university researcher. In addition, representatives
from seniors organizations, seniors service agencies, and the municipalities,
serve on coordinating and advisory committees in each city. These representatives
also act as links to a broad network of people concerned with seniors'
issues.
