Focus Group Discussions

Identifying Issues

An important part of determining what factors affect the quality of life of seniors is the organization of focus groups.

In each of the eight project sites, interested seniors and representatives from seniors organizations are gathering to discuss specific issues affecting seniors' health and well-being.

In Toronto, our 40 member Advisory Committee, along with individual seniors, helped the Seniors Coordinating Committee identify 9 topics of discussion for the focus groups:

  1. Access to information
  2. Acute illness and injury (see:  health care)
  3. Cultural issues
  4. Hearing seniors' voices
  5. Housing
  6. Income and benefits
  7. Long term health care (see:  health care)
  8. Promoting healthy lifestyles
  9. Transportation and mobility

These issues are discussed within the context of policy decisions that affect the lives of seniors. Four questions are asked:

  1. What policy decisions made by governments are affecting seniors' quality of life?
  2. How do these decisions affect the quality of life of seniors?
  3. What influences are leading governments to make these decisions?
  4. What responses to these decisions might be made?

Summaries of the talks held in Toronto are available here.

We are also very interested in what individual seniors have to say. Below is a "comments" section in which you may type your own perspectives on these issues, or address concerns that you believe have not been discussed.

Please indicate the issues you wish to address:
