The Toronto project is directed by a Coordinating Committee of
10 seniors. The work of this committee is supported by the Quality of Life
Research Unit at the Centre for Health Promotion, University of Toronto.
An Advisory Committee has been set up to advise the
Coordinating Committee on the work of the project, and to provide
a link to a broad network of seniors organizations and groups.
The network that is connected to the Toronto project represents
about 500,000 seniors.

Update of Activities
Focus groups were carried out in the autumn of 1999 on nine topics that
were identified from thorough consultation with our Advisory Committee:
housing, acute health care, long-term health care, income and benefits,
transportation, healthy lifestyles, access to information, hearing seniors
voices, and cultural issues. A focus group with seniors was carried out
for each of the first eight topics, and three focus groups were carried out
with seniors representing some of the cultural diversity of Toronto (First
Nations, Cantonese-speaking Chinese, and Portugese). Focus groups and
interviews were also carried out with service providers and municipal representatives between January and March 2000 on the same topics.
In
addition, information has been gathered from our Advisory Committee and
from concerned seniors on other issues that are important to seniors. Some
of these include: elder abuse, dental care, sexuality, caregiver concerns,
and being perceived as valued members of society.
The information gathered was organized around policy decisions made, the general effects of those policy decisions, and the more specific effects of those policy decisions on seniors lives.
We are beginning to formulate our Action Plans. These will be set out in July and August and will be implemented from September 2000 to March 2001.
Our website is developing and will include the reports from all 8 cities. As of now, we do not have funds to use the website to implement our Action Plans.
