Protecting Personal and Confidential Information using Encryption

This document is a resource for selecting and using electronic data storage devices, specifically portable USB memory and laptop computers, that use encryption. The information presented here is designed to help community members comply with the University FIPPA policy Security for Personal and Other Confidential Information.

Important: Note that, from a user's perspective, the use of encryption usually involves remembering a password or having a credential available to activate decryption. If that credential is unavailable, it must be recoverable or the encrypted material is lost forever. End users should get advice on the use of these products from IT staff to ensure proper and effective use.
