Pre-departure Sessions

Students looking to participate in a University sponsored program overseas are encouraged to participate in a pre-departure orientation. The purpose of these workshops are to inform students of some the risks that they may encounter while abroad and to develop strategies for minimizing difficulties while abroad. Topics to be discussed, include; health insurance, extending OHIP, immunizations and health care, culture shock, safety advice and emergency procedures.

Regular pre-departure orientation sessions will be offered for groups going overseas on University Travel. If your group consists of 10 or more students, please contact the Safety Abroad Advisor at safety.abroad@utoronto.ca to book an information session.

Please note that you must bring a copy of the Foreign Affairs country report for your study abroad destination, to the Predeparture Session.

*Workshop for Higher Risk Destinations. This workshop is recommended (and mandatory for those participating in the ISXO exchange program) for students going to destinations that Foreign Affairs recommends that travellers "excercise a higher degree of caution". Other students may also attend. For advisory level, please review the country report.

Transfer credits for ISXO Faculty of Arts & Science & UTM students:
All FAS & UTM students participating in an ISXO Exchange program are required to attend an information session on Transfer Credit Rules, Procedures, and Pre-approvals.

Women's Only Travel Workshop

Women travellers will face many issues specifically related to their gender. This workshop aims to identify some of the common experiences faced by women and to collectively develop strategies for overcoming some of the obstacles women encounter. Topics of discussion, include dealing with sexual bravado, making connections with females within the host community and safety tips.

Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Transgender Travellers Workshop

This workshop is open to all members of the University of Toronto community interested in understanding the different ways in which sexual orientation can affect the travelling experience. Discussion will be directed by the interest of participants. Potential topics may include; coming out overseas, identifying and meeting LGBT people overseas, dealing with homophobia within a cross-cultural context and safety advice.

OSAP for Exchange Students

Students participating on an exchange program and will be applying for OSAP during their sojourn are encouraged to attend this information session. Francis Yun, from Awards and Admissions, will be offering a very informative session reviewing the procedures for OSAP applications during your sojourn abroad.

Re-Entry Session

This session is designed to provide students with useful information about the re-entry process; academic issues, reverse culture shock and maximizing one's experience. Come out and share your adventures with the ISXO staff and fellow international adventurers!
