Going overseas is inherently dangerous and while most students go abroad without incident, there are many risks associated with cross-cultural travel. Whether you are just beginning to consider going overseas or already have a ticket in hand, it is worthwhile to review this web site.

It should also be noted that no web site nor guideline can cover all the issues related to going overseas. Likewise, regardless of the preparation and care that one takes, no one can guarantee the safety of a student participating on an overseas sojourn. However, by identifying many of the risks involved and developing strategies to deal with common problems faced overseas, a student can reduce their risks and minimize the effects of these hazards,

While working through the web site, it may be useful to ask yourself these questions and complete the exercises given. If you are having difficulty answering a question, contact your program sponsor for assistance.

The web sites also contains a number of health and safety tips that students may find particularly useful. If you have a tip or piece of advice that you wish to share with students please feel free to forward them to safety.abroad@utoronto.ca.

Program Administrators

Whether it be a semester in the culturally similiar UK or an intense development internship in South Asia, all students can benefit from developing a health and safety risk management plan. To this end, the Safety Abroad Office has compiled together a health and safety on-line manual for you and your students.

Administrators of overseas programs are encouraged to have students review this web site early on in the process of sending students overseas. . This will allow students to ask questions and participate fully in the pre departure session. Please contact the Safety Abroad Office to find out about other pre departure orientation assistance.
