The
bibliography below is an attempt to gather and organize
the rich and varied lexicographical work of Dr. Frank
Horace Vizetelly. Dr. Vizetelly’s works include
an extensive array of uniligual and bilingual dictionaries,
works related to the making of dictionaries and to the
preparation of manuscripts, encyclopedias and many prescpitive
writings
intended to “better your English”. What
made the compilation of this bibliography particularly
intriguing were the countless subsequent issues and
reprintings, especially of the dictionaries. Moreover,
minor changes to the titles of the dictionaries (for
example: Funk & Wagnalls New Standard Dictionary
of the English Language compared to Funk &
Wagnalls Standard Universal Dictionary of the English
Language) often made it hard to establish whether
a certain year was the date simply of a reprint or actually
represented a new edition. The two main sources of this
bibliography were WorldCat and the Library of Congress
Catalogue. Apart from these sources many other catalogues
of both public and academic libraries, mainly in the
U.S., were consulted in order to obtain all the dates
of the reissues and new editions. This
project is a work in progress, which we will update
as more information is found.
