April 9, 1904:

"J. H. S.," Buffalo, N. Y.— The pronunciation of “advertise`ment” in which the accent is placed on the penultimate syllable, was that originally used by English-speaking people, being formerly in greater vogue throughout the United States. The words “advise” and “aggrandize” have their accent upon the last syllable, and the nouns derived from these verbs, "advise`ment" and "aggrandize`ment" are also accented on the penultimate. This pronunciation is on a par with the pronunciation of "aggrandize`ment," which most of the dictionaries prefer. In so far as "advertise`ment" is concerned, this is not an innovation, but merely a restoration, which should become universal in the course of time.
