Taking Public Universities Seriously
A conference sponsored by the University of Toronto

Convocation Hall, University of Toronto

December 3-4, 2004

The Taking Public Universities Seriously conference focussed on the evolving role of the public university in industrialized democracies, and the implications of this role for creating optimal government policy. The conference involved leading policy-makers, university administrators, and scholars from both Canada and abroad.

The Government of Ontario recently announced a comprehensive review of the design and funding of the post-secondary education system, to be undertaken by former Premier of Ontario, the Honourable Bob Rae. Yet the challenges and opportunities confronting Ontario and Canadian public research universities are by no means unique. Many industrialized countries have been forced over the last several years to respond to challenges in higher education in novel and creative ways.

Whatever policy reforms are ultimately proposed for this Province can and should reflect the very best ideas in higher education policy from around the world. The goal of this conference is to provide Ontario policy-makers with an opportunity to subject these international policies to rigorous scrutiny, and to benefit from the insights and perspectives of experts from these other jurisdictions.

The conference proceedings have now been collected in a book, Taking Public Universities Seriously, published by U of T Press. You can order copies online here.
