2013 UTCSP Annual Scientific Meeting: a success!
Scientists, clinicians, educators, and students gathered at the 2013 UTCSP Annual Scientific Meeting on February 26. The event included lectures about the latest advances in pain research taking place at U of T from the perspectives of those studying chronic pain epidemiology and associated costs, improvements in pain assessment, cellular/molecular mechanisms in animal models, and human brain imaging. The meeting revealed the diverse range of approaches used by pain researchers at U of T and stimulated fruitful cross-disciplinary discussions.
Guest speaker Dr. Gerald Gebhart, University of Pittsburgh, integrated classic studies with the latest research to discuss the biological mechanisms of visceral pain. A poster session showcased the work of talented UTCSP trainees who were recent recipients of the 2012-13 Pain Scientist Scholarship (Danielle DeSouza, Ruma Goswami, Erika Harding). Finally, a panel discussion titled “Being and Becoming a Pain Researcher” highlighted both the challenges and rewards associated with pursuing a career in pain research.
The meeting was organized by Dr. Michael McGillion, Chair of the UTCSP Research Committee, and Dr. Tim Salomons, Chair of the UTCSP Scientific Meeting.
