The main advantages of making the necessary change are,
- the same email configuration can now be used on and off campus. For
those with laptops, this means the same email client configuration can
be used when traveling (whether using UTORvpn or not). For those using
Sympatico, Rogers, or other ISP for home access, the same configuration
used in the office will work
- encryption of network access provides better protection of
your password and message content when they flow across
the network.
- all mail sent is checked for viruses, providing increased protection
to recipients (and making UofT a better Internet citizen.)
- mail sent to other UTORmail addresses will never end up in the
recipient's junk-mail folder. (There have been problems in the past
when those who are off-campus, find email sent to other UTORmail
recipients ends up in the recipient's junk-mail folder.)
- Authentication when sending email should allow us to better control
spam sent by a workstation, should it ever become compromised.
We would like all UTORmail customers to make the necessary software
configuration change as soon as possible. (To enhance the university's
security, after a period of time to permit making this change, we will
propose denying access for those who haven't made the change.)
For those using workstations that are managed by a university IT
administrator, please contact that administrator for instructions.
