UTORmail: Configuring Microsoft Windows Mail for UTORmail

Summary: Microsoft Windows Mail is an e-mail client with the Vista operating system, intended to be a successor to Outlook Express.

Before You Start

Before you start, please ensure your UTORid has been activated, and that you have your @utoronto.ca email address and UTORmail configuration number handy.

Quick Reference For Experienced Users

If you are experienced configuring E-mail client software, just use the values in the Values Summary box below. Otherwise, proceed to the directions for creating a new account.
General Configuration Values for Microsoft Windows Mail
Configuration Setting: It is looking for the: Configuration Value:
Email Address Your "@utoronto.ca" email address your-email-address@utoronto.ca
Incoming Server UTORmail IMAP Server mailboxNN.utcc.utoronto.ca, enable SSL, port 993
Outgoing Server: UTORmail SMTP server smtp.utoronto.ca, enable TLS, port 587
Incoming User name: your UTORid your_UTORid
Outgoing User name: your UTORid your_UTORid

Configuring an existing account in Windows Mail

  1. Start Windows Mail.
  2. Click on the "Tools" menu and select "Accounts...".


Click on the Account Profile you use for UTORmail, (if it's not already the default), and

Click the "Properties" button to display the various configuration tabs. Your information may appear similar to this example.



Click on the "Servers" tab, revealing the page where changes are needed.



Change the "Outgoing mail (SMTP):" setting to "smtp.utoronto.ca"

Note: If you use an Internet Service Provider (ISP) other than UTORmail, (from home for example), you may need to use their SMTP server name. Contact your ISP for this information.

Then check the check box near the bottom left corner labeled "My server requires authentication"

Next, click on the "Settings..." button, revealing the following page.



This is the default and should appear as in this screen shot. Click OK.

Finally, click on the "Advanced" tab, to reveal this screen.



Here four key changes are needed.
a) Under "Outgoing mail (SMTP):", check the check box that reads, "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" and change the port number to "587".
b) Under "Incoming mail (IMAP):", check the check box that reads, "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" and change the port number to "993".
If the "server type" is "POP, please use port "995" instead of "993".
Then click the "Apply" button. Then the "OK" button, finally the "Close" button.
