Help Protect Your E-mail with Enhanced Security Network Access

Enhanced security network access uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) as a protocol that helps ensure the privacy of documents transmitted over the Internet, including email messages. Once activated, SSL encrypts your incoming messages, ensuring that passwords and other private information can not be intercepted in transit.
Activating SSL in Outlook is quick and easy, and CNS strongly recommends that you do so as soon as possible.

The Information Commons Help Desk and UTM Help Desks do not provide support for Microsoft Outlook.
This page is provided to help Outlook users properly configure Outlook for use with UTORmail.

Have your UTORid and password handy and complete the following:

  1. Start Outlook 2007.
  2. Go to Tools > Account Settings...
  3. In the following window below choose the name of your UTORmail account and click Change to proceed




  4. In the following window,
    Enter Your Name in the box labeled Your Name
    • Enter your @utoronto.ca in the box labeled E-mail Address
    • Set the "Account Type" to IMAP
    • Enter your mailbox server in the box labeled Incoming mail server (IMAP). For example, if your configuration number is 57, your mailbox server is mailbox57.utcc.utoronto.ca
    • Enter smtp.utoronto.ca in the box labeled Outgoing mail server (SMTP).
    • Enter your UTORid in the box labeled User Name.
      Afterwards, click the More Settings . . . button, located on the bottom right corner.






  5. This will display the screen below.




  6. Click on the "Outgoing Server" tab.
    ** Click the check box next to "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication".
    • Confirm that "Use same settings as my incoming mail server" is selected.




  7. Click on the "Advanced" tab.
    • Under Incoming server (IMAP) select SSL for the box labeled "Use the following type of encrypted connection:".
    • Confirm that the server port number for the incoming server changed to 993 (this will happen automatically when you check the box in the previous step).
    • Change the port number to 587 under "Outgoing server (SMTP)"
    • select "TLS" for the box labeled "Use the following type of encrypted connection:".




  8. Click OK to close the "Internet E-mail Settings" window.
  9. Click "Next" in the "Add New E-mail Account" window
  10. Click Finish in the E-mail Accounts window.
