Configuring PC-Pine and Alpine for UTORmail

Summary: This document provides specific instructions on how to configure PC-Pine and Alpine for use with UTORmail. The values provided should work with earlier releases of Pine and Alpine.

Before You Start

Before you start, please ensure your UTORid has been activated, and that you have your @utoronto.ca email address and UTORmail configuration number handy.

Installing Pine

Pine is available from the Information Commons Website, or can be downloaded from the Pine site. A newer version, released as Alpine is available here.

Show Installation Instructions

  1. Download Pine from the Pine site.
  2. Save the file to your Desktop.
  3. After the download has finished, quit your web browser and disconnect from your Internet service.
    • We also recommend closing any other applications you have running at this time.
  4. Find the file you downloaded and double-click on it. You will see a progress bar as it extracts the files necessary for the installation.
  5. Run the PC-Pine install program. You will be asked to input your full name and email address. Your full name will be displayed on the "From:" line of emails you send. Click the "Next" button to move on to the next screen.
  6. You will be asked if you want to save your password on this computer. This option will create a password file in your Windows user profile that will enable you to save your password. Once you have saved your password, opening PC-Pine will give immediate access to your account. This option is recommended to users with physically secure computers. If you wish to save your password, check the box and click the "Next" button.
  7. Unless you wish to install PC-Pine in a non-standard installation directory, you can just click "Next" until the installation has completed. Once you have completed the installation you will be able to access PC-Pine via shortcuts on the desktop and in your Start menu.

This completes the installation.
