Configuration of Outlook Express 6 for UTORmail

Summary: This document provides specific instructions on how to configure Outlook Express 6 for use with UTORmail. Outlook Express is the E-mail program that comes with Internet Exporer 6 (IE6). Outlook Express version 6 is the release currently supported by the Information Commons. This page provides steps and settings for configuring Outlook Express 6 manually. The values provided work with earlier releases of Outlook Express, but may look slightly different.

Before You Start

Before you start, please ensure your UTORid has been activated, and that you have your @utoronto.ca email address and UTORmail configuration number handy. Additionally, for Outlook Express, please ensure that you are connected to the Internet before you begin.

Installing Outlook Express

Windows XP users should already have Internet Explorer and Outlook Express 6.0.

Show Installation Instructions

Step 1. Download and Install the Software

Note: Windows XP users should already have Internet Explorer and Outlook Express 6.0.

  1. Click on the text Click here to start download located on the download Web page (You will need 55 MB for the installed software but 89 MB free during the installation phase).
  2. Save the file (oe6.zip) to a temporary folder.
  3. After the download has finished, quit your web browser and disconnect from the UTORdial service.
  4. Quit any other applications you have running at this time.
  5. Find the file you downloaded (oe6.zip) and double-click on it.
  6. You will see a Windows Update window. Read the license agreement carefully and click in the radio button beside "I accept the agreement" and click Next. This initializes the setup.
  7. You will see a window with two install options. Click in the radio button beside "Install Now - Typical set of components" and click Next.
  8. You will be notified that the Setup program is preparing to update Windows and a progress indicator will show you the status of the installation. Once the installation is complete, the Setup program will optimize your system.
  9. You will see a window notifying you that you must restart your computer. Click on Finish. This automatically restarts your computer.
  10. When your computer is restarting, you will see a number of windows notifying you that Windows is setting up your internet applications. Once this is finished, you should see icons on your desktop for Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.

The setup program has installed two separate programs, Internet Explorer (a web browser application), and Outlook Express (a mail and news reader application). You will be configuring Outlook Express.

This completes the installation.

If you are experienced configuring Web and email client software, just use the values in the table below. Otherwise, proceed to the directions for creating a new account.

* Where "your_UTORid" is replaced by your UTORid.
** Where "mailboxNN.utcc.utoronto.ca" is replaced by your UTORmail configuration number.

*WARNING! The POP setting on Outlook Express, by default, removes all email messages from your UTORmail INBOX. We strongly recommend that customers using Outlook Express use IMAP for incoming mail server.

Creating Your UTORmail Account in Outlook Express

  1. Start Outlook Express.
  2. Enter your name in the Display name: field, and click Next.




  3. Enter your UTORmail e-mail address in the E-mail Address field: and click Next.




  4. In the E-mail Server Names window:

    • Choose IMAP from the drop down menu
    • In the Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server: field, type mailboxNN.utcc.utoronto.ca where NN is your configuration number
    • If you are unsure of your configuration number, please visit the UTORid information page at https://www.utorid.utoronto.ca/cgi-bin/utorid/info.pl
    • In the Outgoing mail server field, type smtp.utoronto.ca.
    • Click Next.




  5. In the Internet Mail Logon window,
    • Enter your UTORid in the box next to "Account name:"
    • Type your password in the Password field.
    • Click Next.




  6. Click Finish to complete the Internet Connection Wizard.




  7. Continue with the directions in the following section.

Help Protect Your E-mail with SSL

Enhanced security network access uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) as a protocol that helps ensure the privacy of documents transmitted over the Internet, including email messages. Once activated, SSL encrypts your incoming messages, ensuring that passwords and other private information can not be intercepted in transit.

Activating SSL in Outlook is quick and easy, and CNS strongly recommends that you do so as soon as possible.

Have your UTORid and password handy and complete the following:

  1. In Outlook Express, in the Tools > Accounts.




  2. Click on the Mail tab, select your UTORmail account entry and click Properties.




  3. The following window should appear. Note the six tabs at the top of the window.




  4. Click on the Servers tab

    • The box next to "Incoming mail (IMAP):" should say mailboxNN.utcc.utoronto.ca (where NN is your configuration number)
    • If you are unsure of your configuration number, please visit the UTORid information page at https://www.utorid.utoronto.ca/cgi-bin/utorid/info.pl
    • The box next to "Outgoing mail (SMTP):" should be changed to say smtp.utoronto.ca
    • Under "Incoming Mail Server"
      • The box next to "Account name:" should be your UTORid

    • Under "Outgoing Mail Server"
      • check My server requires authentication
      • Click on Settings and verify that the outgoing server uses the same logon information as the incoming mail server, click OK




  5. Click on the Advanced tab and you will see a window that looks similar to that pictured below.
    Make the following changes:
    • Under the line Outgoing mail (SMTP): check This server requires a secure connection (SSL)
    • In the box beside Outgoing mail (SMTP): enter 465.
    • Under the line Incoming mail (IMAP): check This server requires a secure connection (SSL)
    • In the box beside Incoming mail (IMAP):, confirm that 993 appears.




  6. Click OK
