AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

KATHLEEN BEATTY ADAMSON SCHOLARSHIP

The gift of Mr. T. Adamson in honour of his wife, Kathleen Beatty Adamson, a former student in the Department of Near Eastern Studies.

The successful candidate must have obtained A standing in the Specialist programme in Near & Middle Eastern Civilizations. Preference is given, in the following order, to students with the most full course equivalents in the area of (1) Assyriology, (2) Ancient Syria-Palestine, (3) Egyptology.

If there is no suitable candidate, the Scholarship may be awarded to an outstanding student in the Major programme in Near & Middle Eastern Civilizations who has taken at least two full course equivalents in biblical Hebrew.


E.G. CLARKE SCHOLARSHIP

A gift in honour of Ernest G. Clarke (1927-1997), Victoria College graduate (1949), Associate Professor of Biblical Hebrew and Old Testament, Queen's Theological College (1956-1961), and Professor of Aramaic in the Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Toronto (1961-1992).

Awarded to a student in NML 150Y (Introductory Biblical Hebrew) who, on completion of the course, has demonstrated the greatest amount of progress.


JOHN FLETCHER MCLAUGHLIN SCHOLARSHIP

The gift of former students and friends in memory of John Fletcher McLaughlin (1863-1933) of the Victoria College Class of 1888, Professor of Oriental Languages and Literature at Victoria College 1893-1931.

Awarded to a Victoria College student with overall A standing who is enrolled in a Specialist or Major programme offered by the Department of Near & Middle Eastern Civilizations, and who has completed at least four NMC courses.


T.J. MEEK PRIZE

The gift of the late T. J. Meek, Professor Emeritus of Near Eastern Studies.

Awarded to the graduate or undergraduate student who submits the best essay on any aspect of Hebrew syntax.


WILLIAM EWART STAPLES SCHOLARSHIP

The gift of Wallace Edmond McLeod and Elizabeth (Staples) McLeod of the Victoria College Class of 1953 in honour of William Ewart Staples (1891-1964) of the Class of 1914, Professor of Ancient Near Eastern Studies at Victoria College 1932-1962.

Awarded to a Victoria College student with overall A standing who is enrolled in a Specialist or Major programme offered by the Department of Near & Middle Eastern Civilizations, and who has completed at least two NMC courses.


R.F.G. SWEET AWARD

The gift of the Near Eastern Studies Students' Association in honour of Professor R. F. G. Sweet, former Chair of the Department of Near Eastern Studies, with additional funding from his colleagues in the Department.

The successful candidate must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 in the Specialist or Major programme in Near & Middle Eastern Civilizations, be involved in extra-curricular activities related to the interests of the Department, and have completed at least ten full course equivalents. If there is no suitable undergraduate candidate, graduate students will be eligible for the award. Financial need will be taken into consideration. Applicants should enclose a photocopy of their OSAP assessment.

Students interested in being considered for this award must apply in writing to the Chair, Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations, by October 31. The application consists of a letter detailing the candidate's extra-curricular activities and student ID number.
