NML305Y Introductory Akkadian (formerly NMC305Y)

The grammar of Old Babylonian is described during a 12 class period using Caplice, Introduction to Akkadian, as a source book. During that time the students learn the basic cuneiform signs. We will then read extensive passages from the Law Code of Hammurapi. (Offered in alternate years)

NML405Y Intermediate Akkadian (formerly NMC405Y)

Following a review of the grammar covered in NMC 305Y, the course continues the study of the Old Babylonian dialect through the reading of a few Old Babylonian royal inscriptions and then introduces the student to the Middle Assyrian and Standard Babylonian dialects. Texts such as the Middle Assyrian laws, the annals of Sennacherib, the Flood Story (Tablet 11 of the Epic of Gilgamesh), and the Creation Epic (Enuma Elish) will be read and studied. (Offered in alternate years)
Evaluation: Four tests (20% each) and class participation (20%)
