Canadian Society for Mesopotamian Studies A.K. Grayson Lecture on Assyrian History and Culture -- a free public lecture
" 'A Firm Yes': Divination in the Assyrian Culture of Knowledge"
How the study of physical phenomena in ancient Assyria relates to the history of science is a question as important for the study of ancient Assyria as it is for the history of science. Over the course of science’s history to the modern period the form and content of knowledge have changed as science and its practice have changed. This talk explores the nature of what we would call natural knowledge in the Assyrian Empire, in particular its cultural and epistemic values. In addressing the nature of knowledge in one of the best documented periods of Mesopotamian intellectual history, we will examine both the historical reach of what we call science as well as the viability of the very category of science for Near Eastern antiquity.
