Visiting Scholars 2001-2002

In its start up year, the Program brought two visiting scholars for one-month periods of research to the University of Toronto:

  • Dr. Tatiana Zhurzhenko, a post-doctoral research fellow from the Department of Philosophy at V. Karazin Kharkiv National University, conducted research on "Social Reproduction and Gender Politics". In her research Dr. Zhurzhenko looked at the differential gender impact of contemporary social policy in Ukraine and changes in the system of social reproduction caused by economic and political reforms, which have led to the worsening of economic and social status of Ukrainian women. She also taught a workshop in the CREES MA Program entitled "Gender Experiences of Transition in Post-Soviet Societies".
  • Olena Nikolayenko, an MA candidate at Kansas State University and a native of Horlivka (Donetsk region), did research on freedom of the press in Ukraine in the 1990s. She studied media coverage of the 1994 and 1999 presidential elections in Ukraine using qualitative and quantitative approaches. In September 2002 Olena moved to the University of Toronto to enter the PhD program in political science.
